CAT / UCY ERASMUS LECTURE by PROF. ARHONTO TERZI (TEI Patras):

Acquisition of Prepositions in Greek

The usual CAT rule applies for this event: Everyone is welcome! After the talk, we'll go out for dinner. Please email Lena Papadopoulou, the CAT Coordinator, if you want to come along.

When?

Tuesday, 15 June 2010: 17.00–19.00.

Where?

At the University of Cyprus Main Campus in Nicosia (i.e. the "old" campus on Kallipoleos): room T.B.A.

Who?

Prof. Arhonto Terzi is professor in the Department of Speech and Langage Therapy at TEI Patras.

What?

We discuss acquisition of Greek locative P(reposition)s focusing on:
a) the production vs. comphrehension asymmetry demonstrated by epano se 'on' and epano apo 'over/above' and
b) the fact that epano apo seems to be acquired before epano se, contrary to findings crosslinguistically.
We provide an explanation that takes into serious consideration the syntactic structure of such Ps in Greek, in particular, the combination of a lexical and a functional element, and explore possible alternative approaches to be tested in future research.
